Copyright and Neighboring Rights in Music

Every track has two layers of rights: copyright (covering music and lyrics - owned by the author) and neighboring rights (covering the specific recording - owned by the performer and phonogram rights holder). Tochka Music helps artists understand who owns what, how to structure agreements with co-authors and beatmakers, and how to protect their share in features. If a track is released without properly documented rights, streaming platforms can block the release and freeze royalties.

How to Register Copyright on a Song

Copyright registration is not a single step but several procedures: depositing the work, registering with RAO and VOIS, and registering the recording and release in international catalogs. Tochka Music handles all of these steps during the release process - artists do not need to visit RAO or VOIS separately. Registration provides proof of authorship, without which you cannot protect a track in court or through DMCA.

Anti-Piracy Protection and Removal of Illegal Copies

After release, a track can appear on piracy sites, on YouTube under third-party channels, or in Telegram channels as MP3s. Tochka Music monitors for infringement, sends DMCA notices, submits takedown requests for illegal uploads, and works with rights management services on streaming platforms. We assist with pre-litigation and court procedures in cases of major infringement.

Rights Transfer Agreement for a Song

A licensing or exclusive rights transfer agreement covering the recording and/or the composition is signed between the artist and the label. The agreement specifies: term, territory, permitted uses, royalty rate and payment schedule, and the label's promotion obligations. For more on cooperation formats, see the label page. Transparent terms with no legal traps is a core principle of Tochka Music.

Track Registration in International Catalogs

To release on streaming platforms, every track must be registered in international identification systems - without this, platforms cannot count streams or distribute royalties to rights holders. Tochka Music handles all technical registration automatically as part of the release process - artists do not need to learn encoding standards or formats.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Terms are discussed individually, with no hidden fees. It depends on catalog size, number of platforms, and the format of cooperation. Contact us and we will find the right option.
How often does an artist receive payments?
Streaming platforms settle with rights holders quarterly. So artist payments arrive no more than once per quarter, following each platform's schedule. The first payment typically arrives 60-90 days after release.
How soon will payments start coming in?
First payments arrive 60-90 days after release. After that, money comes in quarterly payments on each DSP's schedule - Spotify, Apple Music, Yandex Music, VK Music, Zvuk, and others.
Do you work only with label artists?
Primarily yes, but we consider strong independent projects. Send us your music with some context and we will talk.
